Newly Constructed & Relocated Sataua District Hospital Opens
The newly constructed and relocated Sataua District Hospital on the South West Coast of Upolu, was opened on the 23rd April 2015.
The relocation was necessary due to the susceptibility of the old hospital location by the sea to extreme weather events.
The new hospital follows the new standard design for our district hospitals with few modifications. It offers rooms and facilities for outpatient consultation and treatment, overnight admission of patients, obstetrics delivery and minor surgery, pharmaceutical dispensing, administration, living quarters for staff and is fully fenced.
This project was made possible with funding from the Tropical Cyclone Evan Recovery Fund contributed to by our own government and our development partner community. We are ever grateful to the support of our donor partner community, inclusive but not limited to the Governments of Australia and New Zealand, the European Union and the World Bank.
The total cost was $3.1 million Samoan Tala. The design and supervision was by the project management and engineering firm of Kramer Ausenco, and the construction is by local contractor Schwarz Construction Limited. Total building time was 9 months since groundbreaking in July last year.
The hospital sits on a 5 acre property on a long-term lease to Government from the Vaai family.
